Smarties chocolate cake with cocoa powder, water, bicarbonate of soda, egg(s) (free range), unrefined dark muscovado sugar, sunflower oil, vanilla extract, self-raising white flour, cocoa powder, butter (unsalted), golden syrup, unrefined golden icing sugar, chocolate decorations. To make this smarties chocolate cake for 20 persons you will need 25 mins for preparation and 40 mins for baking.

  • 2tbsp Cocoa powder
  • 50g Butter (unsalted)
  • 2tbsp Golden syrup
  • 300g Unrefined golden icing sugar
  • Chocolate decorations


  1. Step 1Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C, 350°F, gas mark 4). Grease and line a 9″ x 12″ rectangular baking tin.
  2. Step 2Mix the cocoa with the boiling water. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda and set aside to cool.

  3. Step 3Whisk the eggs, sugar, oil and vanilla in a mixing bowl until blended. Stir in the flour and the cocoa mixture until smooth.

  4. Step 4Pour into the tin and bake for 30-40 minutes until risen and firm to the touch. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool.
  5. Step 5For the icing, melt the butter and golden syrup together with 1 tbsp water. Beat in the icing sugar, to make a smooth icing. Add a little extra boiling water if needed. Spread over the cool cake.
